The Camping Checklist- What to Take Camping

If you’re planning a camping trip, you need to also plan what you’re going to bring. There’s nothing better than a fun filled camping adventure with family and friends, but there’s nothing worse than getting to a far flung destination and not having what you need.

I recommend creating, or printing the list we have below to help you prepare for your trip. As you’re packing up the truck, van, mule or whatever vehicle you’re traveling in, check off the items as you load them. Another great organization tip is to purchase large duffle bags or rubber containers and label them with the appropriate name, e.g., cooking, cookware, etc…

Cooking: You have to eat! Make sure to also plan you meals and don’t forget to bring snacks!

• Camp stove and fuel
• Charcoal (if you’ll be using on-site barbecue)
• Food preparation table
• Coffee pot
• Folding table and chairs

Cookware and Utensils: This is the section people typically forget an item or two. Make sure that the items below coincide with the food you’re going to be cooking.

• Measuring cup
• Pots and pans
• Pot holder
• Spatula/tongs
• Serving spoon
• Knives, forks, spoons
• Plates, cups, bowls
• Salt and pepper

Misc: Depending on your choice of camping activities this part of the list might vary quite a bit. Yet, what we’ve provided below are highly recommended. If you’re going fishing, or canoeing, add the necessary items to this part of the list.

• Camera
• Spare batteries, Spare memory card
• Power charger for cell phone
• Radio
• GPS
• Compass and maps
• Multipurpose knife or camper’s tool
• Folding table and chairs
• Clothesline/clothes pins
• Rope, cord or wire
• Whisk broom and dustpan
• Small sewing kit

Sleeping: Weather is a huge factor when preparing these items. Make sure to check the weather before leaving for your trip. If it’s going to be cold, determine that your sleeping bag is adequate for the temperature.

• Ground sheet
• Sleeping pad
• Air bed and pump
• Sleeping bags and blankets
• Pillows and pillow cases
• Sheets
• Foam ear plugs
• Sleep mask
• Night wear
• Hat to wear on cold nights
• Flashlight
• Books/magazines

Camping gear: Ah…the gear that makes camping possible. We recommend that you check this list twice. Camping without a tent can be an uncomfortable experience if you’re not prepared for it.

• Tent, poles and stakes
• Ground cover or tarp
• Stake mallet, stake puller and small hand axe
• Tent repair kit
• Screenhouse
• Flashlight
• Battery-operated lantern
• Extra batteries
• Lantern, fuel and extra mantles
