The Camping Checklist- What to Take Camping

If you’re planning a camping trip, you need to also plan what you’re going to bring. There’s nothing better than a fun filled camping adventure with family and friends, but there’s nothing worse than getting to a far flung destination and not having what you need.

I recommend creating, or printing the list we have below to help you prepare for your trip. As you’re packing up the truck, van, mule or whatever vehicle you’re traveling in, check off the items as you load them. Another great organization tip is to purchase large duffle bags or rubber containers and label them with the appropriate name, e.g., cooking, cookware, etc…

Cooking: You have to eat! Make sure to also plan you meals and don’t forget to bring snacks!

• Camp stove and fuel
• Charcoal (if you’ll be using on-site barbecue)
• Food preparation table
• Coffee pot
• Folding table and chairs

Cookware and Utensils: This is the section people typically forget an item or two. Make sure that the items below coincide with the food you’re going to be cooking.

• Measuring cup
• Pots and pans
• Pot holder
• Spatula/tongs
• Serving spoon
• Knives, forks, spoons
• Plates, cups, bowls
• Salt and pepper

Misc: Depending on your choice of camping activities this part of the list might vary quite a bit. Yet, what we’ve provided below are highly recommended. If you’re going fishing, or canoeing, add the necessary items to this part of the list.

Sleeping: Weather is a huge factor when preparing these items. Make sure to check the weather before leaving for your trip. If it’s going to be cold, determine that your sleeping bag is adequate for the temperature.

Broken or damaged tent poles - a brief commentary

Tent poles are possibly the most temperamental part of any tent and many tent companies will not extend their product guarantee to cover the tent poles

As a rule of thumb, you get what you pay for and if you are serious about camping or serious about getting decent quality in a camping related product, it's better to purchase a decent quality item from a company that specializes in camping related products

Patching a tent pole together will only get you so far and depends on the nature of the damage but don't expect to get 100% function out of it - consider it a temporary quick fix solution until you can get something more permanent

A lot of it also depends on the style of tent you have eg a simple a-frame or pup style tent is far easier to assemble with improvised parts than a complex geodesic dome

CEC: General tips on assembling your tent

Hi Kim and Kylie, thanks for your email

Give yourself some time, plenty of space and patience - set up between 2 people can take 30mins and over time less as you get to know your tent

Take out all the tent components from the duffle bag and lay them out

Identify all of the parts and follow the instructions carefully - see attached pdf assembly instructions (useful to keep a copy)

The Oberon is a fly pitch first tent meaning you assemble the poles into the rain fly and set it up first

After that, you assemble the separate sleeping inner tents and then the ground sheet

Use the tent stakes to get the initial layout but bear in mind you might have to adjust the position to ensure that all sides of the tent fabric are stretched tight to ensure a good shape

Use the guy ropes included for stability and to help keep the fabric taut

Those are the general guidelines for setting up a tent but if you have more specific questions, please let us know and we'll be happy to help

My Favorite Tall Camping Tent

Can you imagine? What a cool road trip! Five friends, a Durango and 9500 miles in 37 days. Five best friends embarking on a mission to inspire people to “Live Out Loud”. What fun. Check out their site atthedurangodrifters.yolasite.com.

They inspired me to try and figure out what tent I would choose if it were up to me and I think I’ve found the perfect one. It’s the Atlas & Miga Complete MTS – Quick Set Up Version made by the innovative Camping Equipment Company. I love all of their tents but I believe that this modular tent system takes first prize. Let me tell you why I think so.

First of all, it is comprised of a big center tent and three stand-alone but attachable tents that are like pods. Sort of like space shuttles attached to the main space station. Pretty cool, don’t you think? The middle part is a free standing screen house that provides an enormous living area. It is an astounding 24’ long, 10’ wide and – get ready for it – 9’ tall. I absolutely love tall tents! This space is so big that you could even play Twister in it!

Secondly, the three pods are separate free standing tents that can be attached to the main big tent or not depending on what your current needs are. I truly do think you’ll find that this big tent combo is extremely versatile. You can use one, two or all three of the smaller tents as necessary. For instance, say you’re on a two week long camping trip and your in-laws come for the weekend – no, scratch that, let’s not go there! Instead, say a couple of your friends come for a couple of nights. You can set up one of the small tents off to the side and that way you’ll all have a bit of privacy. Or, say your 12-year-old son has brought a friend. You know they’re not going to want to stay too close to you. You could even use one of the pods as a dog tent. That way your wet dog will stay off of your dry sleeping bag. Or a doghouse, if you have a fight with your main squeeze and there’s no couch to sleep on. Really, the possibilities are endless.

Thinking about these kids’ trip has got me dreaming of having a grand adventure of my own. Picture this – it’s been a long day on the road, you find the perfect secluded camping spot, you set up the tent(s), fire up the old camp stove, have a scrumptious dinner and then, when dusk starts creeping in and the mosquitoes emerge full force, you take refuge in the bug free zone of the screen house and relax as you take turns telling stories and sharing hopes and dreams of the future. Then comes the best part. Snuggling down into your comfy sleeping bag (in your own cozy pod) and laying quietly, listening to nature singing you a peaceful lullaby. Ahhhh…. heaven! I really don’t think it get any better than this.

No more oil spills
